You hear it all the time; you must exercise if you want to lose weight and be fit. As a matter of fact, the CDC says that exercise is the only way that you can lose weight and keep it off. So just what does exercise do? It is very simple; it helps you burn the extra calories that you consume. Most things that you consume have calories in them. The more you eat the more calories you stash in your body. If you don’t find a way to burn them you will grow overweight. To be healthy, you need to burn more calories than you consume. So far, the only way to do that is through exercise.
How much exercise is recommended?
It varies from person to person; the rule of thumb is that you work up a sweat consistently for at least 30 minutes. You will know that you have reached your peak if you can no longer speak while performing the workout. Most healthy adults are able to do this without any trouble. If you are not in a condition to achieve this you can do less strenuous things like walking which although will not burn off the recommended amount of calories is better than no exercise at all.
What exercises can you do?
There are all sorts of exercises that you can do. If you are not sure you can go online and have a look at some of the thousands of exercise videos that are posted there. Generally, there are 4 kinds of exercises that you can do – aerobic, muscle strengthening exercises, muscle strengthening exercises and balance and stretching activities. All these are aimed to take care of different parts of the body. Aerobic exercises, for example, are designed to get your heartbeat elevated which is healthy for your heart. Muscle strengthening activities on the other hand are designed to help the body get abs and bigger, stronger muscles. Here are simple exercises that you can do:
1) Jogging outside or on a treadmill – this one is aerobic; it is good for cardiovascular health.
2) Pushups – these are used to strengthen arm and thing muscles. Although they are usually for the more seasoned, there is no reason why you cannot start slow and eventually be able to do more of them as you get more in shape.
3) Swimming – this one works on your muscles as well as your heart. So long as you have a pool at your convenience there is no reason why you cannot go for a dip every time you have a chance. If it’s too cold you can take up another exercise such as walking or jogging.
These are very basic exercises that you can use to get you started in getting rid of extra calories that are making you overweight.
